Comment: An evocation of Durer's famous picture, this outstanding model is the largest of Fragonard's ecorches. Apparently, a man and his horse, stripped of their skin, ride Forever. However, according to legend, the rider may have been the daughter of a grocer in Alfort, France, which whom Fragonard had fallen in love. As the story is told, the young girl's parents opposed the romance and she died of sorrow. Fragonard dug her out of her grave to mount her on the horse and, therefore, allegedly, immortalize their love. However, a close inspection of the horse rider's remains reveals a penis, proving that this romantic, chilling fable was unfounded.
