Comment: Other preparations by Fragonard of figures on horses are mentioned in inventories, but, this is the only one that has surfaced. In his right hand, the rider holds blue velvet reins which are clenched in the horse's jaws. The left hand holds a whip. The macabre effect of this scene was intensified by small human fetuses riding sheep; and also horse fetuses gathered around The Horseman of the Apocalypse, as if they were his army.
