Comment: There are more than 177 miles of man-made tunnels and unused quarries under the streets of Paris. Their access is now forbidden, and special police forces now patrol the galleries. When I produced these images in 1980, nobody knew the existence of this underworld, and I did not meet a single person during my photo shoots. Hence, the publication of Paris Underground provoked a true urban phenomena, and the quarries became a major focus for inner city culture. (I did not reveal any of the secret entrances, but, somehow that knowledge spread very fast, and the quarries became the coolest places to hang out.)
