Comment: In 1795, the cemeteries of Paris were so overcrowded that corpses were popping up to the ground surface and in cellars of the houses nearby. Needless to say, this created a very dangerous threat to public health. So, a decision was made to empty the cemeteries and crudely dump the remains of 6 million Parisians in the quarries. This morbid transfer was done at night, under the guise of darkness and out of the discerning view of the public. The most extraordinary fact of this years-long effort is that the workers, instead of piling up skulls and bones, have created a very artistic display of the remains, which serve as their own tombstones, expressing philosophical statements on Life and Death...
